First posted September 27, 2022 For additional information, contact: Pacific Coastal and Marine Science CenterU.S. Geological Survey2885 Mission St.Santa Cruz, CA 95060 Passive membrane samplers—semipermeable devices polar organic chemical integrative samplers—were deployed for 22 continuous days at 7 sites along the West Maui, Hawaiʻi, coastline in February March 2017 to assess contaminants shallow coral reef ecosystems from diverse upstream inputs. The distribution of compounds observed these coastal showed considerable variability; high concentrations microbially sourced all sites, with pentadecane as predominant normal alkane, relative importance marine microbial matter carbon pool. Pharmaceuticals personal care products, well flame retardants, were also detected sites. Of seven sampled, Kahekili Beach Park site had highest number unique Honokōwai Stream compounds. Two individual compounds, a retardant fragrance, ubiquitous across studied Maui reefs, including least-developed site. A direct correlation land-use practices or legacy agricultural inputs was not readily since polychlorinated biphenyls, pesticides, herbicides, insecticides detected. Results provide snapshot contaminant abundances select nearshore environments captured during wet season, which drier than expected. These data can be useful understanding range stressors potentially affecting ecosystems, such groundwater watershed runoff.
